What Should I Expect From My First Guitar Lesson
Starting guitar lessons can feel a little daunting, especially if you’ve never played an instrument before. The good news is that you don’t need any previous experience, and there’s no expectation that you should already know what you’re doing.
At String Fingers, your first guitar lesson is mainly about finding out where you’re starting from, what you’d like to achieve, and how I can help you get there.
If You’re a Complete Beginner
If you’ve never played guitar before, that’s absolutely fine. We can start with the basics, including how to hold the guitar comfortably, and how to begin producing clear notes and chords.
There’s no need to prepare anything beforehand. Your first lesson should give you a manageable starting point rather than overwhelm you with too much information at once.
If You Already Play
If you’ve been playing for a while, the first lesson gives me a chance to hear you play and get an idea of your current strengths and any areas you’d like to improve.
You might want help with rhythm, chords, lead playing, technique, music theory, improvisation, learning songs or simply getting past a point where you feel your progress has stalled.
From there, we can decide what would be most useful to work on.
Your Musical Interests Matter
One of the most useful things you can tell me is what kind of music you enjoy and what you would eventually like to be able to play.
Lessons don’t have to follow exactly the same route for every student. Your favourite songs and styles can help shape what we work on while still developing the skills you need to become a better guitarist.
If there are particular songs, bands or guitarists that have inspired you to learn, feel free to mention them.
What Should You Bring?
If you already own a guitar, bring it along to your lesson. It also helps to bring any picks or other accessories you normally use.
If there’s a particular song or piece of music you’d like to discuss, you can mention that beforehand or bring the details with you.
Most importantly, you don’t need to worry about impressing me. The purpose of the lesson is to find the right starting point for you.
What Happens Afterwards?
By the end of the first lesson, we should have a clearer idea of your goals and what to work on next.
I’ll normally give you something manageable to practise between lessons, and we can build gradually from there. The aim is to help you make steady progress while keeping guitar playing enjoyable.
